About the Book
Thousands of ancient magical artefacts have been preserved. This introduction provides an overview of the inscribed magical artefacts dated between the first and the seventh century from the Roman Empire including Egypt. The overview comprises ancient magical gems, amulets, gold and silver tablets (lamellae), curse tablets (defixiones) as well as instruments. Their contexts include protection and healing, love and marriage, wealth and success, victory and power, and cursing.
The overview is accompanied by step by step readings and illustrations of selected artefacts. Each chapter includes a comprehensive compilation of online as well as offline resources for further reading.
