Daily Ancient Magic #22: Tricky sacred names

In the Demotic magical papyri, the name of a higher power is often written in Greek above the Demotic word. Such additions are called „glosses“. They were necessary because the Demotic script does not contain vowels. With the help of the ancient Greek alphabet, the correct pronunciation of the name could be ensured. This was crucial for the successful performance of a ritual, because what counted was the correct sound of the names.
